Camp Fun Facts—Oh, the Miles We Walked

We all know camp is good for the mind and soul. But, let me just tell you how really good it is for the body as well!

(All you math and P.E. teachers are going to appreciate this.)

Oh The Miles We WalkOur good friend Beck Marlar did a little real-life math to calculate and approximate the total steps he, Cary, and Karla took over the course of their 11 weeks in the Canyon this summer. You may be a little astonished by the results. (What about Chandler, you ask? Well, he did quite a lot of driving through the river between Singing Hills and Echo Valley, so we weren’t 100% sure how we could adequately figure his steps in. Maybe our next Camp Fun Facts will be, “Oh, the River Miles Chandler Drove!”)

With the help of his fitness tracker, Beck calculated that each one of them individually took in the ballpark of 1,121,760 steps, which is the equivalent of 590 total miles. When you multiply that by the three LLYC directors (Beck, Cary, Karla) collectively, you get 3,365,280 total steps, for a whopping 1,770 miles!

Let’s take a minute and consider … that means, if each one of them had walked the equivalent of their Canyon steps starting at the HEBFF office in Kerrville, Texas, each individually could have walked almost all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana; Wichita, Kansas; or even Truth or Consequence, New Mexico!

Or, if they joined forces as a relay team and combined their Canyon steps, they could have walked all the way from Kerrville, Texas; to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Missoula, Montana; or Chico, California.

That’s logging some miles, not to mention burning some major calories!

LLYC: good for the mind, soul, AND body.
